Waypoints
1. Sheffield City Centre to Meadowhall Shopping Centre (5 miles / 8km)
You will begin the route on the towpath of the River Don in Sheffield City Centre. As you come to Sanderson's Weir, there is a pub on Savile Street East, just where you would cross over the bridge to continue the walk along the other side of the river. There is also another pub a little further on along this section of the route if you are wanting some refreshments. You will walk along Newhall Road to walk, once again, on the other side of the river and the pub will be further along this road on your left hand side. If you are not wanting to stop for refreshments, continue to follow the path along the path where, again, you will be lead across to the other side of the path. At this point you will also be walking briefly away from the river, joining it again by Brightside Weir. From here it is just a short distance to Meadowhall Shopping Centre. Here, there is a train station, plenty of shops to browse around, toilets, telephones and a food court if you are wanting something to eat and drink.
2. Meadow Hall Shopping Centre to Sheffield Arena / Don Valley Stadium (1.5 miles / 2.4km)
From Meadowhall, which is just near Hadfields Weir, you walk for a short distance before joining the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal. You will pass Meadowhall South / Tinsley tram stop along your way. When you are walking along the Sheffield and Tinlsey Canal, you will be following the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal Trail. Passing by Tinsley Locks, and also Carbrook tram stop, continue along the path of the canal. The path that you are walking along will be connected with another footpath / cycleway. Here you have the choice to walk along the towpath of the canal or take another route through Sheffield. To go through Sheffield, you turn right, passing a pub on your right before turning left and passing by Sheffield Arena. Continue straight on along the path, walking by Arena / Don Valley Stadium tram stop, before passing the Don Valley Stadium.
3. Sheffield Arena / Don Valley Stadium to Sheffield City (2.5 miles / 4km)
As you walk along the footpath of this section, you will pass a couple of pubs and also places to eat. The path will lead you back onto the River Don towpath. When you get to the towpath, you will need to turn left, so you do not go along the same route that you followed at the start of the route. You will now be walking back along the Five Weirs Walk, towards the starting point. If you continue along the path, passing a couple of pubs and some toilets on the way, then you will find yourself in Sheffield City Centre.
