This moderate walk takes you back in time to the industrial past of Birmingham and its fascinating canal history and architecture.
The walk starts at Gas Street Basin and follows the line of the canal, past Icknield Port loop, under the Birmingham to Wolverhampton railway line, the areas of Sandwell and Smethwick, under Galton Bridge, built in 1829 by Thomas Telford, as far as the Toll island near Bromford Junction where a toll-clerk would one have been stationed. Access back onto the road is possible at Sandwell & Dudley station, the end of this walk.

Parking: Parking is available at various locations throughout Birmingham. Also at New Street and Sandwell & Dudley railway stations, at either end of the walk.
Public transport: Birmingham's central England location makes it accessible by car, train and bus from all points in the country.
