Duration: 0.5 hours

Difficulty: Easy

Circular route from: British Waterways Visitor Centre

This short route is a fascinating trail through a brief history of the canal, from the Visitor Centre which was once a 19th century canalman's cottage, Aldermaston Lock which is now a grade II listed structure and the overgrown gravel pits dating back to 1947.

The trail is marked by short black posts in the ground with white numbered tops.

From the Visitor Centre walk west along the towpath towards the A340. Cross the road at the bridge with care. Walk over the lift bridge to the south side of the canal and walk down the towpath to Aldermaston Lock.

From here walk back towards the road and on down Mill Lane. Half way down here turn left to walk (quietly please!) through the woodland along the path until you reach the little bridge, crossing the bridge to Padworth Lock.

Taking great care, walk slowly over the lock gates to the towpath. Continue west along the towpath to get back to the Visitor Centre and car park.

Getting there

Public transport: Padworth is easily accessible by car off all main routes from Reading and Newbury. Exit at Junction 12 if you are on the M4.
