Circular route from: St. George's Quay, Maritime Museum, Lancaster (on the River Lune)
The Lancaster Canal's towing path and the Lune Estuary Path form a fascinating circular walk. From wherever you start, you will be rewarded with ever changing views, canal heritage and a rich variety of wildlife and plants.
1. From the Maritime Museum follow the Lune Estuary Path northwards alongside Lancaster and up to the Lune Aqueduct. This 200-year old structure provides excellent views of Lancaster, the Forest of Bowland and Ingleborough.
2. At the Aqueduct cross the bridge and come down onto the Lancaster Canal's towpath heading southwards back towards Lancaster itself. Enjoy the views here.
//For a shorter walk, you can leave the towpath after Bridge 95, following the road west through Aldcliffe. After half a mile, a footpath will lead off to the right on the path of an old railway. Follow this footpath all the way back to the Maritime Museum. Alternatively, for the full walk, continue along the towpath for steps 3, 4 and 5://
3. Follow the towpath on to Deep Cutting which was dug out by the navvies to avoid a long detour. You can also see Lancaster Castle and the majestic Brantbeck Bridge from here. Keep a look out for wildlife here, especially kingfishers.
4. Walk down as far as Glasson Branch and take this fork right to follow the Branch all the way to its basin near the River Lune, where you'll see many yachts in harbour.
5. Take the Lune Estuary path almost back on yourself to cross over the River Conder and back northwards to your starting point.
