Linlithgow 25 mile Cycle Route

This is an interesting route, with good climbs and descents. There is plenty to see along the way and some fantastic views. There are places to buy food in Philpstoun (not open Sundays), the Kirklands Inn and Newliston Arms in Kirkliston do bar food, there is a filling station and small shops in the village of Newbridge and plenty of cafes, pubs, shops and bakeries in Linlithgow.

Waypoints

1. Linlithgow Train Station to Hopetoun Fisheries (10.5 miles / 16.8km)

e entrance to Abercorn Church on the left. Turn left when signposted Hopetoun House, which you will pass on your left about 1km further down. Bear right twice, which will give you some wonderful views of the Firth of Forth and the House. Turn right after the gate where the aprkland ends (this is easy to miss) and then you will have a hard climb ahead. When you come to the lodge house, turn right. Turn right once again after 200m and then at the cottages, turn left. Continuu straight on, following the signpost for Winchburgh. There will be some glorious views of the Pentland Hills ahead. When you come to Duntarvie Castle, you need to turn left , which will be signposted Westmuir and Fishery. When signposted for Westmuir, turn right. You will need to be careful as there is a sharp left hand bend ahead and you will come to Hopetoun Fisheries.

2. Hopetoun Fisheries to Ecclesmachan (7 miles / 11.2km)

From Hopetoun Fisheries, cross over the railway bridge and turn left on the B9080. There will be some traffic lights at a crossroads in Kirkliston, and you need to turn right into Station Road here. The road will bend to the right and you will need to cycle left into High Street which is signposted Newbridge, and then turn immediately right into Wellflats Road. Turn right onto the path of an old railway, which will be signposted Newbridge again, and cross the River Almond. At Newbridge roundabout, turn left to cross the footbridge and a signpost will ask you to dismount from your bike. Continue straight ahead on the cycle path beside the A89 and pass under the railway viaduct. After the viaduct, turn right which is signposted Winchburg and turn left when the road crosses the railway. Niddry Castle is ahead. Turn left where it is signposted Broxburn and go straight on, which will be signposted West Binny. Before you reach the B8046, you are in Ecclesmachan.

3. Ecclesmachan to Linlithgow Railway Station (7.5 miles / 12km)

You will need to be careful crossing the B8046 and pass the footpath signed 'To Binny Castle'. From here, you will see some beautiful views of the Ochil Hills. Turn right which is signposted Linlithgow and after 1km, turn right on the minor road, signposted Ochilltree. After the left hand bend, there will be a short climb past a fort on your left. At Wester Ochilltree, there will be a T-junction where you will need to turn right and after 50m, turn left. There is a long, steep descent to the bridge so you will need to be careful. After a short, steep climb, turn left at a T-junction on to the B9080 and this will take you directly into Linlithgow.
