Taking a short walk in York

This excellent urban route takes you past plenty of attractions and riverside pubs, perfect for when you want to stop for a break.

This walk is ideal if you like some variety when you are walking. It has all the ingredients for a good walk, including many interesting sites, a fairly flat surface and a number of resting sites.

Waypoints

1. Esplanade car park to Museum Gardens (2 miles / 3.2km)

The walk begins at esplanade car park on Leeman Road on the south side of the River Ouse, next to York station. You will walk east along the River Ouse which will bring you to a mix of regenerated buildings forming plenty of pubs and places to eat. Further on from here you will reach slightly unpleasant looking section of the River Foss. After leaving the Foss after a short time, you will walk north through the 13th century Cliffords Tower where you will see a more attractive River Foss. To conclude this circular walk, you will need to head west along Piccadilly and through York's quaint city centre. You may want to take a well earned rest at the Museum Gardens whilst taking in the views of the River Ouse and the spectacular ruins of St Mary's Abbey. There is also a shop if you decide to have a picnic while you are there.
