Lancaster Canal »
Distance: 14.5 miles / 23 kms
Duration: 6 hours
Difficulty: Energetic
Suitable for: Everyone
Starts at: Tewitfield Locks
Ends at: Kendal
This stretch of the Lancaster Canal was used by barges between 1819 and 1942. In the late 1960s the M6 was built, preventing navigation north of Tewitfield. Today the waymarked path forms a fascinating route. From wherever you start, you will be rewarded by ever changing views, canal heritage and a rich variety of wildlife and plants.
Simply take the footpath alongside the Canal from Tewitfield, past the locks and on past Holme and its Larch Woods.
Follow the canal around its bend past Crooklands and on through Hincaster tunnel, originally used to take barges close to Sedgwick Gunpowder Works, using horses to pull from the path above and bargees' legs to push them along the tunnel.
You will continue on to pass the skewed aqueduct at Sedgwick before completing the final 3.75 miles to Kendal and the end of this walk.
