There is much to look out for along the route, including skylarks and meadow pipits, which both breed in the summer on Boyers Lake, Kingfishers, which are more likely to be seen in the winter.

Walkers may also be interested in the pillbox and tank trap which have been left over from World War II.

Waypoints

1. Dagenham East Station

The route begins at Dagenham East Station on Rainham Road South. From here, you will need to turn right, cross over the pedestrian crossing, then turn right and then turn left into Western Avenue.

2. Western Avenue

Walking down Western Avenue, take the second left and the footpath to the right. Walk to the end of the path, passing the 'squeeze gate' on your way.

3. World War II Pillbox

Following the path to the left, on your right you will pass a bat cave which is actually a World War II pillbox. You will pass some stunning scenery as you walk along the tarmac path to the railway line.

4. Boyers Lake

As the path splits, folow it to the left, with the railway line on your right and Boyers Lake on your left. When you reach the end of the path, turn right out of the exit gate and back onto Rainham Road South and the station where you began will be opposite you to your right.
