A tough 268-mile, high hill walk along the backbone of England, the Pennine Way was the first national trail in Britain, officially opened in 1965.
This route chases the Pennine mountain tops from the Peak District, through the Yorkshire Dales, over Hadrian's Wall and into the Cheviots, using old miners track, packhorse routes and drove roads. It passes through Cumbria between Birkdale and to the north of Alston in the North Pennines.
