Walk along the Melton Mowbray Navigation

The Melton Mowbray Navigation was originally built for broad beam boats and the lock chambers are larger than usual. The Boat Inn is a reminder that Burton End is the site of the old canal basin. This route was provided by the Melton & Oakham Waterways Society (MOWS) who campaign to preserve the Melton Navigation and the Oakham Canal.

This route is quite picturesque, taking you through a variety of fields, over many bridges and stiles.

There is a pub opposite the car park, The Boat Inn, used to be the canal basin pub. You will need to follow the narrow path on the left into Play Close and follow the footpath straight ahead. Continue past the Leisure Pools with the canal to your right and you will come to Leicester Road. The nearby Leicester Road Bridge is made of cast iron and replaced the brick canal bridge in 1884. You will need to cross over the bridge where the footopath will lead you through the kissing-gate onto the towpath to the left of the canal. Follow the canal until you reach the junction with the River Eye. The route takes you into the next field, where you will need to cross over a stile close to the river. Walking straight on will bring you to the Old Northern Railway Line Bridge. It is sometimes quite muddy here so you may need to be careful.
