Walking from Dewsbury to Salterhebble

The towpath has recently been upgraded by British Waterways, and is becoming a popular venue for both keen and leisure walkers. Organisations organise walks starting at local drinking holes, which are free and all are welcome to join.

1. Dewsbury to Ledgard Flood Lock (4 miles / 6.4km)

The route begins in Dewsbury, on the Dewsbury Arm of the Calder & Hebble Navigation. Walk along the towpath and when you have the choice to go left or right, go right. You may need to cross over the Dewsbury Arm Branch to do this. When you come to Brewery Bridge, if you are wanting some refreshments, cross over as there is a pub on the other side of the water. Continue along the towpath, passing through Thornhill Lees and past Greenwood Flood Gatea. There are a few pubs nearby. It is about a mile from here to the Ledgard Flood Lock. There are a couple of pubs here and also a supermarket if you want to get some refreshments.

2. Ledgard Flood Lock to Brighouse Basin (4 miles / 6.4km)

From Ledgard Flood Lock you will need to follow a short diversion and then continue to walk along the towpath. As you come to Cooper Bridge Flood Gates, you will need to cross over the bridge to walk on the other side of the navigation. You will see the Huddersfield Canal which joins with the Calder & Hebble Navigation just a little further along. Again, you will need to follow a short diversion back onto the towpath of the navigation. Once back on the towpath, it is about 2 miles to Brighouse. There are a number of pubs around and also a supermarket and places to eat.

3. Brighouse to Salterhebble (4 miles / 6.4km)

Continue along the towpath of the Calder & Hebble Navigation. There are a number of pubs along the route. When you get to Elland Bridge, you will need to cross over and continue walking along the opposite side of the towpath. Cross back over again at Elland Road Bridge. There is parking near here. At the Salterhebble Locks, cross over the water and walk along the towpath of the Salterhebble Branch which will end in Salterhebble.
