The Union Canal travels 31.5 miles from the Falkirk Wheel to Edinburgh with the capital's castle just a short walk away. Along the canal are a variety of restaurants and daytrip/hireboats. All in all, a walk down the Union Canal is an experience you are unlikely to forget.

1. Scott Russell Aqueduct to Redhall Aqueduct (2 miles / 3.2km)

Scott Russell Aqueduct was named after a Glasgow born engineer who discovered solitary waves which travelled down canals without losing any strength, known as 'solitan'. The aqueduct, which goes over the Edinburgh bypass, was named after him in 1995. Set of from the aqueduct along the Union Canal. You will pass quite a few bridges along the way and when you come to Dumbryden Road Bridge there is a shop nearby if you are wanting some refreshments. From here it is just a short distance to Redhall Aqueduct.

2. Redhall Aqueduct to Harrison Park (2 miles / 3.2km)

After walking along the towpah for a short distance, you will come to Slateford Aqueduct and then Prince Charlie Aqueduct. You will also come to Railway Aqueduct before arriving at Harrison Park.

3. Harrison Park to Edinburgh Quay (1 mile / 1.6km)

Continue to walk along the towpath from Harrison Park. When you get to Yeaman Place Bridge there are a couple of pubs and places to eat if you are wanting refreshments. From here it is not too far from Edinburgh Quay. It is only a short distance from here to Edinburgh Castle which dominates the city of Edinburgh.
