There are two routes onto Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK at 4406ft, but for ordinary walkers the best choice is from Achintee Farm in Glen Nevis, about 2km from Fort William.
The first half of the climb takes you to the attractive Lochan Meall and t-Suidhe, and although the path is steep, this is a relatively moderate mountain walk. Thereafter, the route zig-zags up the rounded dome of the upper mountain, the views open out to the north, west and south.
If you are lucky enough to pick a day when the top is clear of cloud, the breathtaking views make all the effort you've expended in seeing them worthwhile. The most immediate views are to the east, over Carn Mor Dearg to Aonach Mor and Aonach Beag beyond. To the south beyond Glen Nevis lies the rocky ridge of the Mamores, and still further the mountains of Glen Coe. You can also explore the ruins of an old meteorological observatory when you reach the summit.
Due to changeable weather walkers should check the forecast before setting off and ensure they have adequate equipment with them.
