Achnabrek Cup and Ring Markings
Route facts
Waterways:
Crinan Canal »
Starts at: Lock 5, Crinan Canal
Ends at: Achnabrek
Follow the footpath, which begins near Lock 5 on the Crinan Canal, steeply uphill to the markings – a walk of about 15 minutes.
At the top of the hill are the prehistoric rock carvings which are small round indentations called cup marks, sometimes surrounded by single or multiple rings or spirals.
The site at Achnabrek contains the largest cluster of such carvings anywhere in Britain. Walkers will not only be amazed by location of the site but by the skill and imagination of the people who carved the patterns. What they represent is still a mystery today.
