The Avon Valley Path is a 34 mile, long-distance walking route that takes you along the River Avon from Salisbury to Christchurch Priory and the sea. It was opened in 1992 and runs from Wiltshire, through Hampshire and finishes up in Dorset.
Due to the valley’s broad floodplain, wetland wild flowers and aquatic plant life thrives. The area is also abundant in wildlife, with over twenty-four species of fish recorded, including barbel and salmon, and a wide variety of wildfowl.
The route follows the path of the river for most of the way, passing mills, weirs and sluice gates along its length. There is plenty to do when you come to the magnificent Cathedral city of Salisbury, and ancient Christchurch is lined with quaint shops selling antiques and local crafts. There are also the charming villages of Odstock, Hatchet Green and Mockbeggar to explore, where you can rest your feet and sample some of the local pubs.
