There is now a well established Wreake Valley way walk. It is detailed in two excellent walk leaflets, available from Melton Mowbray library or, Hugh Butler, 10 Main Street, Frisby on the Wreake, Leics LE14 2NJ (01664 434549)
This route follows the original towpath as far as possible, using existing paths and permissive paths to form one continuous walk.

Getting there
Parking: Mill Lane Syston and multiple parking places in Melton Mowbray
Public transport: Regular Leicester-Melton Buses closely follow the route. Stops in all villages along the route. The route terminates at the railway station where a train can be caught back to your start point, Syston.
Waypoints
1. Wreake End footbridge, Mill Lane, Syston.
Cross the concrete footbridge keeping the boatyard behind you. Descend the right - hand set of steps and,keeping the river on your right proceed along the towpath in a roughly eastern direction, passing the (missing) first lock on the navigation, soon arriving a tan impressive railway viaduct.

2. Play Close, Melton Mowbray.
Walk along the canal section through the outskirts of melton, arriving soon at the river and canal confluence. Crossing over both on an ornate cast iron bridge, you find yourself in the play close,the line of trees marking the line of the original canal and adorned with a dummy lock gate seat. Finishing adjacent the railway station (the original terminal basin)
