British Waterways 2011 Wildlife Survey: results

Bat in flight by Hugh Clark © Bat Conservation Trust

Between May and September 2011, nature enthusiasts were out and about on our canals and rivers recording their sightings of flora and fauna for the annual British Waterways’ Wildlife Survey.

Over the course of the survey we were inundated with sightings from all over the country, and we're encouraged to see that the number of bats spotted has increased by nine per cent.

The reliable mallard and Canada goose have retained their top placings, while the butterfly has fluttered up to third place. Other species that were spotted in increased numbers this year include robins, damselflies.
