Walking along the Caledonian Canal
The area around the Caledonian Canal is excellent walking country. Hillwalkers can head off for the Highlands: the rest of us can enjoy the scenery from the level terrain of the canal towpath.
- Ben Nevis: Walk the rough 8km (5 mile) path from Achintree House to Ben Nevis' panoramic summit, 1344m (4409ft) above sea level. It is sobering to think that, hundreds of millions of years ago, these mountains were higher than the Himalayas! The route begins steeply but levels off after 760m (2500ft), leaving the view to take your breath away - rather than the walk. Walkers should be aware of the sudden weather changes around Ben Nevis, and should not attempt the climb without adequate equipment.
- Banavie to Tor Castle: A 2.4km (1.5 mile) walk up the canal bank, past Torcastle Farm to the ruined castle, with views overlooking Loch Lochy.
- Corpach to Gairlochy: A walk along the towing path to the locks at Gairlochy is rewarded with fine views over the River Lochy and the ruined Tor Castle to Ben Nevis.
- Glen Loy Forest Walks: Located on the west bank of the canal just north of Banavie, the beautiful Glen Loy forest offers relaxing walks in a setting rich with indigenous and unusual wildlife and plants.
- Inverfarigaig Forest Walks: At Inverfarigaig, near Inverness, a Forestry Commission Visitor Centre opens the way to many forest walks, offering relaxing, peaceful surroundings with fine views over the loch.
- Clachnaharry to Dochgarroch: An excellent walk amidst the stunning scenery in which the final stages of the Caledonian Canal are set.
The Great Glen Way is a 74-mile route along the Great Glen, using canal towpath and forestry tracks through some of the Highlands' most beautiful scenery - including Ben Nevis and Loch Ness. For more details, visit the Great Glen Way website. There are lots of opportunities to do small sections of the Way and combine a boating holiday with some walking.
There are SYHA Youth Hostels at Loch Lochy and Loch Ness as well as various camping or caravan sites, hotels and BW toilet/shower blocks along the route. Information about these can be obtained from the local Tourist Board or from the Great Glen Way website www.greatglenway.com.
