Crinan Canal
Revelling in the title of 'Britain's most beautiful shortcut' you'd be hard pressed to find a more picturesque stretch of water than the Crinan Canal.
Notice of closure
All Scottish Sea Locks (Clachnaharry, Corpach, Crinan, Ardrishaig, Bowling & Grangemouth) are currently unable to accept or release craft to sea. Skippers should contact local offices and Sea Locks for an update, if required.
Mariners are also advised that essential engineering works are required to repair leaks in the canal bank near Bellanoch Bridge to ensure the integrity of the structure and to minimise water loss.
To allow contractors to work in a drained section, with minimum disruption to long term berth holders in Bellanoch Marina and Crinan Basin two dams will be constructed on either side of the damaged banking and the area pumped dry. Engineers and contractors will then be able to carry out a full inspection and carry out appropriate repairs.
While these works are taking place, regrettably, the canal will be closed to transit customers. The closure will be from 15.00 on Friday 11 December 2009 until 08.30 on Monday 15 March 2010. Crinan and Ardrishaig Basins will remain operational during normal winter hours.
We apologise for the short notice and any inconvenience caused but can assure you that the works are urgently required and will be completed as rapidly as possible and ensure that Crinan is open and ready to accept customers for the 2010 season.
The canal
At just nine miles long it links Loch Fyne at Ardrishaig with the Sound of Jura, creating a pathway for ships through the Kintyre peninsula on their way to the Western Isles.
The Crinan Canal is both an engineering marvel and an idyllic part of Argyll & Bute. Every year, two to three thousand vessels, mostly pleasure craft, pass through this canal. But you don't need a boat to appreciate what it has to offer. Visitors can watch boats negotiating the 15 locks along the canal, or perhaps walk or cycle along the towpath and enjoy the tranquillity and breathtaking scenery to be found in this part of the west coast.
Notice to Mariners
Crinan Canal Draught Resriction
Mariners are advised that the maximum draught for transit vessels on the Crinan Canal has been reduced to 2.0 metres (6 feet 6 inches) fresh water.
Customers are advised to contact the Crinan Canal Office (T 01546 603210) during working hours Monday to Friday to discuss particular passage plans.
This restriction is required to enable Engineers to carry out an inspection of the canal bank between Lock 14 and Lock 13 and will remain in force until further notice.
British Waterways apologise for any inconvenience caused.
