Restriction: Gloucester - Sharpness
27 May 2010 until further notice
Associated Regional Office: South Wales & Severn Waterways
UPDATE (16 July 2010): The Demand Management Measures implemented on 5 July; restrictions on Leisure Craft using Sharpness Port and Gloucester Lock will be removed at midnight on 16 July. The water resource position has improved over recent days, if flows in the river are stable over the coming weeks pumping at Gloucester should enable us to maintain the water level in the canal without the need for restrictions until at least the 8 August, however if drought conditions persist and the river level falls significantly during this period restrictions on Leisure craft may need to be reintroduced.
We would ask for your continued support in minimising lock usage to reduce demand on water. All boaters are asked to plan ahead and wherever possible to share locks at Gloucester and Sharpness.
UPDATE (02 July 2010): Water resources feeding the canal have dropped significantly this month. Flows from all the feeders along the canal are low and the River Severn is in Drought Regulation, being supported by releases from reservoirs in Wales. To date pumping at Gloucester has enabled us to maintain the canal at Operational levels however the current available water resource cannot sustain the canal without reducing lockages at Gloucester and Sharpness.
Therefore it will be necessary to implement the following measures.Demand Management Measures: Monday 5th July.
Sharpness Port:
Gloucester Lock:
The lock will be closed to Leisure craft on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Leisure craft will be allowed to lock on the daytime tides on Wednesday, Friday and Sundays only.
Please note: Subject to safety considerations and lock availability it may be possible for Leisure craft to sail with booked commercial vessels on all tides throughout the week. Customers should check the availability of these additional lockage’s with Sharpness Pier Head. Customers should note that commercial sailings are not regular and are subject to late change and update. The availability of these additional lockages may be limited.
The lock will be restricted to Leisure craft. Lockages will be taken at 8am, 10am, 12 noon, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm daily, Monday to Sunday.
The Lock Keeper will look to limit the impact on customers. Where safety considerations require such as tides additional lockages may be taken. We would ask customers for patience if their journey is delayed.
Commercial craft are requested wherever possible to limit the use of Gloucester Lock to the times given above.
Upper Lode Lock:
Boats travelling to Gloucester will be advised not to continue with their journey to Gloucester if they leave Upper Lode after 4pm.We genuinely understand the concerns customers may have with the implementation of these measures and at present it is not expected that they will need to be escalated. However should it be necessary to continue to escalate water management measures over the course of the summer British Waterways will work to ensure the best balance of measures is implemented.
These measures will be reviewed on a weekly basis and will be removed as soon as practical. An update on the water resource situation will be provided on a weekly basis.
Please contact Gloucester Lock on 01452 310832 or for Sharpness bookings ring Sharpness Pier Head on 01453 511968 or Sharpness Supervisor on 07881 914822 for up to date information.
The River Severn is in drought regulation. This means we have to minimise lock movements to reduce water use. All boaters are asked to plan ahead and wherever possible to share locks at Gloucester and Sharpness. At this stage we are not imposing restrictions but we are monitoring the situation and restrictions may have to be applied in the near future.
Please contact Gloucester Lock on 01452 310832 or Sharpness Pier Head on 01453 511968 for up to date information.(Enquiries: 01452 318000)

Advice: Between Gloucester and Sharpness
04 Jun 2010 until further notice
Associated Regional Office: South Wales & Severn Waterways
UPDATE (10 June 2010): Potentially toxic Blue-green algae (BGA) have been found in this Waterway in sufficient numbers to pose a potential health risk. Although BGA occur naturally in freshwater, there is a risk of serious hazards to health when they occur in high concentrations. The highest concentrations of BGA toxins are found in scums that can form on the water surface, which can look like turquoise paint, grass clippings or floating mats.
The toxins that can be produced can affect humans, pets and livestock. You should avoid contact with the water and prevent livestock and pets from entering or drinking the water. There have been past cases of livestock and pets dying after drinking from BGA affected water. If you need further health advice you should contact your Local Authority’s Environmental Health department and the Environment Agency.
If you do come into contact with the algal scum, remove contaminated clothing and wash all exposed skin in clean water as soon as possible.
If you are in any doubt about your welfare after contact with the algae, please seek medical advice.
This advice remains in force for the remainder of this calendar year. Next year it is possible that this problem will re-occur. We would therefore be grateful if you could tell us if you see any signs of green water or algal scum

Restriction: Sandfield Bridge
25 Jun 2010 until further notice
Associated Regional Office: South Wales & Severn Waterways
Please be advised that it may be necessary to limit the opening of Sanfield Bridge whilst temperatures remain elevated. As temperatures rise through the day it will be necessary to limit the number of bridge opening per hour to allow the hydraulic system to recover and work effectively. We expect that the maximum delay to journeys to be in the order of 30 minutes. The Bridge Keeper will monitor the bridges performance throughout the day adjusting the opening of the bridge as its performance dictates. We will look to limit the impact on customers where possible and would ask customers for patience if their journey is delayed.
