River Don
Rising in Yorkshire, in the midst of the beautiful Peak District National Park, the River Don flows for 70 miles through Sheffield and the Pennines until it meets the River Ouse at Goole.
The surrounding countryside is, at times, simply breathtaking. This part of Yorkshire is known for its steep hills (Sheffield, like Rome, is built on seven hills), which means that energetic visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Don valley from several high vantage points. Penistone and Thurgoland boast particularly pleasing rural settings.
In urban centres such as Rotherham and Doncaster, the Don valley still bears traces of industry. But the Don of today is a clean and healthy river, which salmon, trout and grayling are happy to call home.
