Dock Road Edwardian Pumping Station

Weir Street
Cheshire

Before 1913, sewage in Northwich was pumped directly into the river, which caused widespread pollution. However, Northwich Urban District Council built the Dock Road Edwardian Pumping Station and for over sixty years, it pumped sewage to Wallerscote Treatment Works from Northwich.

The original pumps, which had the ability to pump 96,000 gallons per hour were replaced by electric pumps, which were capable of pumping 36,000 gallons. The originals, however, have been restored.

The Grade II Listed Building provides families with a fascinating insight into what machinery really used to be like. Visitors can see the station in action and hear about the site from wardens. There is a thrilling ambience of authority and institution, created by the noise and site of such fine machinery in action. The station is worth a visit as it is the only fully operational one of its kind.

The station is open from 14:00 - 17:00 on Sundays and Bank Holidays and by arrangement Easter to the end of September.
