Crinan
Terrific views across the Sound of Jura are on offer at this delightful and peaceful spot at the western sea-lock end of Scotland's Crinan Canal.
Built by Sir John Rennie and opened in 1801 the nine miles of the canal from Crinan to Ardrishaig lop off the Mull of Kintyre, creating a dramatic short cut from Oban and the west coast to Glasgow and the Clyde estuary.
Until the advent of the railways, the Crinan Canal created the fastest and most convenient route from Glasgow to Inverness. The Crinan Hotel (01546 830261) is noted for its seafood cuisine.
