Shrewsbury Abbey retains all the splendour, majesty and beguiling sense of mystery that one would expect from an ancient religious power house. The imposing abbey was one of the most important buildings in medieval Shropshire. In 1283 parliament met in Chapter House (the first national assembly to involve the commons) and more recently, the abbey inspired the evocative Chronicles of Brother Cadfael by Ellis Peters.

However, this illustrious history is rooted in humble origins. In 1083 the abbey was no more than a small wooden chapel, founded by the Norman Roger de Montgomery. Monks followed the rule of St Benedict here for over 450 years but thankfully, the abbey was also used as a local Parish Church and this fact helped save the historic building from Henry VIII's widespread dissolution of the monasteries.

Today, the abbey is still a favoured Parish Church as well as a popular tourist attraction.
