From Springs Bridge (B5238) the path goes down the Wigan flight, through the Douglas Valley and comes out at Burscough.

From the starting point, head down the Wigan flight of locks past the impressive JJB stadium and into the wooded Douglas Valley.

Pass under Dean Locks viaduct (which carries the M6) and through splendid rural isolation as far as the village of Appley Bridge, and the last set of locks before Liverpool.

Simply continue along the path alongside flat arable agricultural landscape, and on to Burscough Bridge, a once thriving market town.

Getting there

Parking: There's plenty of parking in Wigan city centre.

Public transport: Public transport links are good. Local train stations along the route mean you can start mid-way, or even cycle the route and return by train.
